We are deeply saddened by the passing away one of the greatest-ever Maccabi and Israel strikers, Rafi Levy.
Rafi Levy played at maccabi for 8 seasons in two spells, won 2 League championships (55/56, 57/58) and 3 Sate Cups (54/55, 57/58, 58/59) and scored from the striker’s position 86 goals in 132 appearances.
Levy, made his senior Maccabi Tel Aviv debut in the 1954/55 season, several weeks short of his 17th birthday, and led the attack as he starred alongside Shiye Glazer.
Fourteen league goals in the 1957/58 season earned Levy the top goal-scorer award, before five goals in the Semi Finals against Shimshon Tel Aviv and another goal in the State Cup Final against Hapoel Haifa helped maccabi win the double that season. The following season (1959/60) Levy won the top goal-scorer award with 19 goals in 20 league matches before leaving in 1961 to Australia and South Africa. He returned to Maccabi in 1966 for another season before returning to South Africa where he played until retiring in 1972.
Before the 2017 State Cup Semi Final which was played in Haifa, members of Maccabi’s former players club visited Rafi Levy at the retirement nursing home he was at and presented him with a framed shirt.
Levy represented the Israel national team on 17 occasions and scored 11 goals including two famous strikes in the 2-1 victory over Yugoslavia in Belgrade in 1960 Pre-Olympic games.
