In honour of the visit to a team training by the assistant ambassador of Portugal, Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club signed an album in memory of Portugal's legendary footballer Eusebio da Silva Ferreira, who died this week
Three days after the death was announced of Portugal's Mozambican born footballing legend Eusebio da Silva Ferreira (Eusebio), Maccabi Tel Aviv Football club have added their signature to an album in his memory. Portugal's assistant ambassador in Israel, Afonso Laginia, paid a visit this morning to Maccabi's Kiryat Shalom training ground, bringing with him the album in Eusebio's memory, one of which is placed in all of Portugal's embassies throughout the world. The assistant ambassador first met with Maccabi head coach and fellow countryman Paulo Sousa, who had already spoken of the sad event at a press conference on Sunday ahead of the match against Maccabi Haifa: "Football has lost one of its greatest figures. My condolences to his family, to football in Portugal and in particular to the footballing community as a whole. He was a very special person to me from the moment I began my career and I wish his family well". Sousa recorded his own personal recollections of Eusebio in the album and added his signature to those of other representatives of the club: Sports director Jordi Cruyff, staff members and players Sheran Yeini and Eran Zahavi.
In related news, a special interview with Paulo Sousa was published this week on the FIFA website in which the Maccabi head coach spoke of the team's forthcoming encounters with FC Basel in the round of 32 of the Europa League: "I think our chances of going through are excellent".
