MTA celebrated their second straight League Championship in style with a spectacular bash at Ganei Yehoshua
Only a year ago, Maccabi Tel Aviv were celebrating their first Israeli Premier League championship in a decade at Tel Aviv's Itzhak Rabin Square. Today history repeated itself, this time at Ganei Yehoshua Park in the north of the city, where tens of thousands of ecstatic Maccabi Tel Aviv fans gathered for the club's second consecutive official title celebrations, this time for the 2013/14 season. Setting the tone for the event were the evening's compares, Radio Tel Aviv DJs and "Goalstar" television programme heroes Harel Slutsky and Ofer Dominguez. Together with MTA's legendary announcer Shay Sidi they warmed up the crowd for the exciting events that were to follow, starting with a truly unforgettable introduction of the entire Maccabi Tel Aviv squad. One by one the players came out on stage to Sidi's rhyming chants and the rhythmic chorus of thousands of enthusiastic fans, creating an atmosphere that surely made them all feel they were inside Bloomfield Stadium itself. But this was just the start of the evening's events. Shortly afterward came the moment everyone was waiting for. The entire MTA squad lifted the season 2013/14 championship trophy into the air, and with them the spirits of thousands upon thousands of the Maccabi Tel Aviv faithful.
Following the excitement of the trophy celebrations came the artistic part of the evening's events, providing a number of unexpected surprises for the many awaiting fans. It began with a smile as a number of characters from Israel's satirical TV programme "Buba Shel Laila" appeared on a big screen congratulating the club and the crowd. This was followed by a stand-up performance by Menni Ozri, a die-hard Maccabi fan, who had the crowd clutching their sides from laughter with his impressions of MTA squad members. Team midfielder Tal Ben Haim joined in on the fun with a number of impressions of his own. But the biggest surprise of all was a song written by another dyed-in-the-wool Maccabi fan, Eliran Avital, together with Meir Benishti. Avital joined the Maccabi players on stage to sing this special song of praise for the thousands of Maccabi fans who had shown so much devotion to the team throughout the season.
After all these surprises and emotions, there was still time for a performance by the Bloomfield faithful's favourite singer, Omer Adam, whose song "Tired of You" has become something of an anthem at every Maccabi Tel Aviv home game. Despite the late hour, and all the energy that had already been expended in the course of the evening, Adam's show clearly kept the electric party atmosphere alive and had everyone on their feet until the last note had been sung. And even then, the determined Maccabi fans kept on singing and jumping until the last light in the park had been turned off. And as darkness fell on the official celebrations, Maccabi's most devoted supporters began to make their way home with just one tune in their hearts – We are the Champions!
