Before this morning's practice, members of the MTA squad showed their support for the fight against racism
These past few days the entire sporting world has been focused on the struggle against racism. It began with an incident at a match between Spanish clubs Villareal and Barcelona when the latter's defender Danny Alves was pelted with a banana whilst out on the pitch. The talented Brazilian responded with humour by eating the banana, but the response of the sports community to this overt act of racism was one of disgust and anger . Since then, clubs and players throughout the world have had their photographs taken eating bananas as a gesture of support for the struggle against this repulsive phenomenon.
This morning, before team practice, members of the Maccabi Tel Aviv squad added their support to that struggle. Team captain Sheran Yeini and squad members Eran Zahavi, Carlos Garcia, Barak Itzhaki, Juan Pablo Colinas and Barak Levy all had their photographs taken holding bananas as a gesture of identification with the fight against racism. The picture, published on the club's official Facebook page, has drawn overwhelming support from Maccabi Tel Aviv fans throughout the country.
Maccabi Tel Aviv FC initiated their own campaign against racism over a year ago, in December 2012.
