When the Maccabi players head out onto the pitch to warm up for tonight's State Cup tie against Ashdod FC, they will be wearing yellow armbands with the word "REMEMBER" to mark International Holocaust Day

Tonight, Tuesday, at 9pm, Maccabi Tel Aviv will play their round of 32 State Cup tie at the Ha Yud Alef Stadium in Ashdod. And when the players come out on to the pitch to warm up they will be wearing yellow armbands with the word "REMEMBER" written on them, in honour of International Holocaust Remembrance Day that was celebrated throughout the world yesterday, January 27th, in memory of the millions of victims of the Holocaust.

Maccabi Tel Aviv owner representative Jack Angelides had this to say on the subject: "It is our obligation to remember the victims of the Holocaust, and the survivors. As a club, it will remain a priority to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive".

Yesterday ceremonies were held throughout the world to mark International Holocaust Day. Maccabi Tel Aviv continued their tradition of marking the day with a visit, by the club's senior and Youth Division goalkeepers, to Holocaust survivor Avraham Avraham, whom Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club took into their care two years ago. In addition, last year the club marked the day with a team visit to the Yad V'Shem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem. It was there that the new members of the squad learned how, at the suggestion of team player Yosef Merimovich, Maccabi Tel Aviv changed the team colour from blue to yellow in sympathy with the millions of European Jews who were forced to wear a yellow Star of David on their clothes during the Nazi era.
