Maccabi pulls down the curtain on a record breaking campaign!
Maccabi Tel Aviv pulled the curtain down on a most successful 2014-15 season on a bittersweet note losing to Maccabi Petach Tikva 2-0 at Bloomfield Stadium Monday night. Not only was the match the final one of the season but it also marked the finale for both outgoing captain Sheran Yeini and coach Pako Ayestaran.
The Yellow-and-Blue controlled most of the game trying in vain to help superstar Eran Zahavi pad his league leading goal total of 27, but it just wasn't meant to be. Zahavi hit the right post on a two on one break in the first half and had a goal disallowed on a questionable off side call in the second frame. The Petach Tikva goals were scored by Gidi Kanuk in the 19th minute and Liran Rotman in the 90th.
Captain Sheran Yeini was honored prior to the match as technical director Jordi Cryuff presented him with a framed jersey and a video presentation was made with him surrounded by his teammates. Zahavi was presented with the Ligat Ha'Al Player of the Year award and was saluted by the more than 11,000 fans on hand.
Coach Pako Ayestaran announced at a pre-match press conference that he would not be continuing with the club as both CEO Martin Bain and Cryuff thanked him for a wonderful year which included winning a domestic treble, the League title, the State cup and Toto cup.
Following the game the players and supporters celebrated the record breaking campaign and will begin preparations for European competition in the coming days.
