Former player Avraham (Ajo) Mordehovich, who played for Maccabi Tel Aviv in the 50s, passed away this week
Avraham was part of Maccabi Tel Aviv’s youth team before the establishment of the state of Israel. In 1947 he was promoted to the first team and played alongside Yossef Merimovich and Eli Fuchs. Ajo played in a variety of positions, including central defender, full back and as an attacking winger. His debut was in 1949 in a 2-1 win over Beitar Tel Aviv.
Avraham took part of a historical moment on May 30th, 1951 when Maccabi Tel Aviv hosted Dundee United for the inaugural game of the Ramat Gan Stadium.
During the 1953 Maccabiah games Ajo received an offer to player for Hakoach New York and moved to the American league.
Ajo was able to reunite with his former teammates three years later, when Maccabi arrived in the United States for exhibition games.
Ajo returned to Israel in 1965 to represent the American team in the 7th Maccabiah games.
