Prior to Maccabi Tel Aviv's first preseason match in which they defeated FK Vozdovac Belgrade 3:0, the club appointed Eran Zahavi as their new captain. The Yellow-and-Blue's number 7 was named captain after Sheran Yeini moved to Vitesse Arnhem in Holland.

Earlier, the Zahavi spoke about his new role and how he envisions himself filling it: "It's a great honor for me to receive the captain's armband, but other than having it around my arm I haven't changed. Sheran left some very big shoes to fill, but I'm up for the challenge and I'm sure that all of the players will help me along the way. Since I came to the club, everyone has been great to me and I want to be the best captain that I can be especially for the supporters."
Zahavi also spoke about the responsibility of being the captain: "Even though I'll have the captain's armband on, there are at least five other players who are captains in their own right and the responsibility will be on all of us. It's terrific to receive the armband and I know everyone will be counting on me and I hope that I can live up to their expectations and the confidence they have shown in me."
