Back on September 5, 1988, Macacbi Tel Aviv played in the Champions Cup against Hapoel Tel Aviv. There were many great names that littered the lineup including Avi Cohen Zt"l, Alon Natan, Benny Tabak, Moti Ivanir and many others.
Head Coach Yosef Merimovich Zt"l also started a 17-year old youngster who was purchased from Maccabi Jaffa at the start of the season by the name of Itzik Zohar who had a chance to lift the trophy after defeating their city rivals 3:0. The midfielder would be able to enjoy many other great feats as a member of the Yellow-and-Blue including the league title in 1991/92 and 1995/96, two Israel State Cups 1993/94 and 1995/96 the Champions Cup plus two Toto Cups in 1992/93 and 1989/99. With great technical ability and fantastic free kicks, Zohar made his mark on the pitch for Maccabi.
Zohar played in the club's first ever Champions League qualifying match against Maltese side Valletta in 1992/93. The dynamic midfielder always put up terrific numbers for the team during his Yellow-and-Blue tenure and in 1993/94 he reached the pinnacle year of his career scoring 23 goals in the league and another four in State Cup play to help his legend as one of Israel's finest footballers grow.
All in all, Zohar played in 275 matches for Maccabi and scored 86 goals.
