Maccabi Tel Aviv achieved one of their greatest victories in recent memory on Monday with the 4-3 away win over Maccabi Haifa at Sammy Ofer Stadium and the match is sure to be enshrined in the club’s hall of fame. But it’s not only the elation in victory that made the occasion so special, it is also backed up by some interesting statistics.
The win was Maccabi’s tenth consecutive away victory in the league and is the longest such run since 1951-52 when the club notched an incredible 19 away wins in succession.
And when taking all results into account, this is also the 30th consecutive unbeaten away game. It equals the record previously held solely by Maccabi Haifa, who registered the feat in 1995.
In a sign of their current fine form, Maccabi have for the first time also reached the 17th round of the league without defeat. Only two clubs, Maccabi Haifa in 2005-06, and Beitar Jerusalem in 1997-98 have managed this.
The 4-3 scoreline is only the fourth time ever that Maccabi have won with that result. Previous 4-3 wins came over Maccabi Netanya in 1960-61, against Beitar Jerusalem in 2009-10 and over Ramat Hasharon in 2012-13.
Further to all those stats, Maccabi have yet to lose to their formidable Maccabi Haifa rivals at Sammy Ofer Stadium, which opened in 2014.
Individually, Yonatan Cohen, who scored the winner in injury time after also scoring from his own rebounding penalty, has now struck eight times this season and is second in the list of season high scorers. He has also provided six assists. The in-form forward has played a part in Maccabi goals in the past seven games in which he has participated. This is a throwback to 2014-15 when Eran Zahavi did the same.
Avi Rikan also showed his big game temperament and scored the first goal of the match, his third of the season.
Eyal Golasa was the star in midfield and topped his performance with Maccabi’s second goal on the night, his second of the season.
Andre Geraldes provided the assist for Golasa’s goal and was also behind the pass to Omer Atzili that ended up at Cohen’s feet for the winner. He has already amassed three assists this season.
Atzili has also provided an assist for the second game in a row and now has a total of four this season. He has also scored three goals in his past three games.
