An Omer Senior injury time winner led Israel to a dramatic late 2-1 victory over Japan to help the U20 national side advance to the Round of 16 of the World Cup in Mendoza, Argentina.
Maccabi’s Dor Turgeman assisted the winning goal with a clever back-heal flick to help 10 man Israel complete the comeback which began 15 minutes earlier. In the 77th minute, Maccabi’s Roy Nawi headed in a close range equaliser to ensure that Ofir Haim’s side advance from Group C to the World Cup Round of 16. Israel now face Uzbekistan on Tuesday (24:00).
Dor Turgeman said after the final whistle: “We never stopped believing. Even when we were down to 10 men we believed we could do it.” Turgeman, who was replaced in the closing stages, admitted: “I didn’t see the end of the game as I was in the dressing room praying but I am delighted we are through to the next round.”
