Maccabi’s most significant achievement during the 1986/87 season was winning the 16th State Cup in the club’s history.
On the way to the final Maccabi had an impressive run which saw them advance at the expense of several big cubs. A 2-1 victory over the 1985/86 champions Hapoel Tel Aviv in the round of 16, a 3-1 victory over Maccabi Jaffa in the Quarter Finals and a 2-0 win over the 1986/87 champions Beitar Jerusalem in the Semi Finals. The State Cup final against Maccabi Haifa ended 3-3 after extra time and was settled at the end of a penalty shoot-out.
The Head Coach was Shimon Shenhar who coached the team between 1985-1987 and for him that was the second Cup victory after winning it with Beitar Jerusalem in 1979.
Maccabi finished third in the league with Beitar Jerusalem winning the championship and Bnei Yehuda as the runners up.
Maccabi’s leading goal scorers were Alon Natan and Eli Driks both with 10 goals each.
Menashe Shimonov and Bonnie Ginzburg made the most league appearances with 29 each.
Twenty players featured for Maccabi during the 1986/87 season with Eli Driks leading the goal-scoring chart with 18 goals. Ginzburg and Shimonov made the most appearances with 43 appearances in all competitions.
Maccabi also won the Lilian Cup (the League cup competition which was played between the top four clubs). A 3-1 victory over Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Semi Final was followed by a 2-1 victory over Maccabi Haifa in the final.
Maccabi’s highest victory was a 7-1 victory over Beitar Netanya on MD15 with Eli Driks (2), Yair Sanduri (2), Alon Natan (2) and Benny Tabak scoring the goals
