Shualei Kfar Aza feature in Kibbutzim tourney

In the aftermath of the horrific October 7th Hamas massacre on their kibbutz Kfar Aza, which is one of the hardest hit communities, Shualei Kfar Aza uses football to try and find some comfort and even made a comeback to playing the beautiful game. The players from the kibbutz which was one of the many Israeli communities devastated by the October 7 Hamas massacre, lost teammates, family members and friends. On Friday however, they all met for a team activity that unites the entire kibbutz which sits five kilometers east of the Gaza strip, was infiltrated by around 70 terrorists and had more than 70 members murdered with around 20 taken hostage.

The Shualim (Foxes) football team participated in the first communal activity organized by The Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council since 7.10 as they played in the traditional Kibbutzim football tournament which was hosted in Kfar Sava.

The foxes, who are the Regional Council’s reigning champions lined-up alongside 11 other kibbutzim before comfortably winning their group. A defeat in the quarter finals at the end of a penalty shoot-out surprisingly ended their run in the regional tournament which was highlighted by the support they received from the fans, the Maccabi Tel Aviv Foundation and sponsor ISRAEL CANADA.

Team captain, Idan Berman whose two brothers Ziv and Gali are held hostage in Gaza, said: “It is not even regarded as a little dent, feels like a defeat in the Toto Cup. We fielded some youngsters and are just happy to be here and meet everyone. Football, the togetherness and the support we receive just gives us a bit of light in these difficult dark times we are all experiencing.”

Golasa and Mishpati’s emotional visit

The Maccabi Tel Aviv FC Foundation continued its’ community work during the war in the South and North of Israel as this week Eyal Golasa and Roi Mishpati visited soldiers who were injured in action.

Golasa and Mishpati visited the Beilnson hospital at Rabin Medical center and met with Omer and Roei who are soldiers from the same military unit and friends from their national service. The duo went into Gaza together, fought side by side and were injured during battle. During the visit, the two soldiers handed Golasa a set of Tefillin they carried with them throughout their duty in Gaza and despite the fierce fighting and injuries, carried it back from the battlefield.

We also met with Yitzhak, a soldier from a combat unit who made Aliya from Chicago as part of Garin Tzabar – a program that facilitates service in the IDF with a support system for Israelis and diaspora Jews who do not have parents in Israel. The October 7th ‘Black Sabbath’ caught Yitzhak in Chicago where he spent a short holiday with his family, but he was quick to hop on a plane and report for duty. Finally we visited Itamar, a Maccabi fan from Gate 11 who was also injured during in the Gaza strip. Golasa and Mishpati visited Itamar and presented him with a match-worn shirt from the victory over Zorya in the Conference League.

The players supporting kids from the south

The state of Israel is in a state of war, and we are all experiencing extremely tough days. Despite all that, one of the bright spots of these days were the extensive volunteering by the public, as well as the Maccabi Foundation and the first team players. All came forward to strengthen the residents of the south thus raising the national morale.

As part of the Maccabi Foundation activities, players accompanied by members of Maccabi’s Youth Academy visited several centers with Eran Zahavi, Yonatan Cohen, Dor Peretz and Eyal Golasa arrived at Kibbutz Shfayim where residents of the Gaza strip border communities were evacuated to following the horrors of the war. The players played football with the kids, had their photos taken with them and obviously handed out some gifts on behalf of the club.

A similar activity involving kids from the south took place on the Tel Aviv beach with Sheran Yeini, Ofir Davidzada and Dan Biton took supplying the entertainment and distraction. Gabi Kanichowsky played his part as well with the midfielder meeting kids from Gaza border communities at Netanya.

Maccabi’s captain, Sheran Yeini, said: “It is a privilege to be able to give these boys and girls from the Nir Am Kibbutz as good a feeling as I possibly can. The situation is just heart breaking and we would all prefer to return to normality as fast as possible. In the meantime, we could do some good deeds and there are few young talents we might consider signing at Maccabi Tel Aviv.”

Ofir Davidzada added: “We must understand that our strength is in our unity. The more we stick together the stronger we will be as a nation, as a military and everything else we do.”

Dan Biton summed up: “We came to strengthen them and were strengthened ourselves. Let us just hope we experience better days in the future.”

Maccabi’s players visited the Shamir medical center

The Maccabi Tel Aviv FC Foundation continued its’ long tradition of visiting hospitalized kids at the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh) ahead of Rosh Hashana.

Five first team players: Eran Zahavi, Idan Nachmias, Nir Bitton, Daniel Tenenbaum and Osher Davida arrived this morning (Tuesday) at the hospital where they visited children in the various wards.

The players spoke with the children, had their photos taken and handed them gifts on behalf of the club.

“Our aim is to put a smile on the faces of all the children who are here” Maccabi’s central defender, Nir Bitton, said. “On our day to day we spend time chasing trivial things compared to what they have here which puts things in perspective. One can really understand the important things in life. As far as we are concerned, if we manage to put a smile on a child’s face – it is worth the world to us” he added.

“As athletes and people that kids look up to in admiration, our decision has some weight and influence. We must set an example, and this is the least we could do to contribute. There are five of us here now, but we represent the entire club and the Maccabi foundation that do a lot in the community. We are here to do our share and wish everyone involved a happy and healthy new year”.

Around 2,500 food packages were delivered for Rosh Hashana
