Making kids happy at Shamir Medical Centre

As part of its’ annual community activities, the Maccabi Tel Aviv Foundation initiated a visit to the Shamir Medical Centre at Assaf Harofe ahead of Purim. Matan Baltaxa, Ofir Davidzada and Dan Biton represented the first team and together with the Foundation representative and club mascot Maccabinio met the kids, had their photos taken and handed out official gifts on behalf of the club.

After the visit, Davidzada spoke about the importance he sees in such community activities: “As footballers, this is one of the most highly regarded things we can do. Visiting these kids was very emotional and is something I proud to do on behalf of the club. It is fun to come here and make these kids happy – as this is the world to them and to us. As players, we have a lot of influence and if one can do positive things with it than this is the best thing we can do. We see their smiles and see how excited they get and it just fills our hearts”.

The 30-year-old, who joined Maccabi in 2017 and his recent good form seemed to have cemented his place at left-back, spoke ahead of Saturday’s Playoff curtain raiser against Sakhnin at Bloomfield: “The kickoff time (15:00) is a game which is ideal for families/ We expect a sell-out crowd and a full stadium. We want everyone to come and push us in a critical match, all the way to a victory”.

Memories of the Holocaust that touched Maccabi’s players

As the international Day in Memory of the victims of the Holocaust is marked today (Thursday, January 27th), the Maccabi Tel Aviv Foundation initiated a special screening of the documentary ‘Numbered’ to the senior side players and coaching staff.

Guided by the testimonies and portraits of Auschwitz survivors, the ‘Numbered’ documentary explorers the significance and the history of the serial numbers tattooed onto the arms at the concentration camp.

After watching the documentary, the Maccabi playing and coaching staff met with the film’s producer, Hila Medalia, as well as Dani Khanokh one of the only two Holocaust survivors who featured in the 2012 movie and are still alive today.

During the meeting, Khanokh, who will celebrate his 90th birthday next week, shared his experience from the Holocaust and the way in which he managed to survive both Auschwitz and the death marches that followed.

Maccabi’s captain, Sheran Yeini, said after the screening: “It was emotional and inspiring to see the way in which they dealt with the hardships at what was clearly impossible conditions. Dani spoke a lot about the camaraderie and the togetherness and at how they used to help one another survive the difficult and challenging times. This is something we can relate to and only be inspired by to take to our lives as athletes and personal lives with our families. Sharing these stories is pivotal especially as there are foreign players and foreign coaches who get to hear about what people had to encounter as they all return back to their families and countries and share their impressions. It is important to keep sharing these stories to ensure they are never forgotten”.

Maccabi’s predominantly Serbian coaching staff, showed a lot of interest and spoke with Medalia at the end of the meeting expressing the great importance as far as they are concerned in documenting and commemorating testimonies from the Holocaust.

The screening is only one of the many activities the Maccabi Tel Aviv Foundation does throughout the year. Besides contributing and doing work in the community, one of the main Foundation’s main targets is creating activities and supporting Holocaust survivors as well as commemorating the Holocaust.

Maccabi’s players visit the Shamir Medical centre

As part of the Maccabi Tel Aviv foundation activities, a representation of the first team players, Eden Shamir, Gabi Kanichowsky, Shahar Piven and Idan Nachmias visited kids hospitalised at various wards of the Shamir Medical centre (Assaf Harofeh) ahead of Chanukkah. The players visited the players, had their photos taken with them, and gave them gifts and souvenirs on behalf of the club.

During the visit, Eden Shamir said: “It is a great honour for us to visit kids and make them happy. In general this is something the club is focusing on, and we are delighted to participate in. One tends to come and strengthen the kids at their difficult time, but as it happens it tends to put things in perspective for us”.

The morning after the disappointing 1-1 draw against Nof Hagalil where he made a second half substitute appearance, the 26-year-old midfielder added: “We all left the stadium disappointed. From the first player to the last fan. Everyone at the club is disappointed, we all wanted to win and start a good momentum of good results. It might sound like a cliche but we will have to work hard in order to fix this. We don;t have too many options. On Sunday we already have a tough match against Beitar Jerusalem at Teddy stadium and there is no room from handing out gifts”.

Honouring the wounded veteran IDF soldiers

As the annual week of appreciation for the IDF soldiers wounded in Israel’s wars and in terrorist attacks is marked across the country, Maccabi Tel Aviv through its’ Foundation, hosted ‘Brothers for Life’ at Kiryat Shalom and received a lecture by some of its’ members.

The players heard from the IDF veterans who are suffering both from physical and mental injuries such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) encountered during their military service, about the dedicated rehabilitation program they receive from ‘Brothers for life’ that covers aspects such as welfare, medical care, and employment.
