Blast from the past: 7:0 against Beitar

May 6, 2001. Maccabi Tel Aviv hosted an always entertaining match against Beitar Jerusalem at Bloomfield Stadium in front of 7,000 fans as Nir Levin’s side had a streak of good matches after starting the season poorly. The Starting XI included the likes of keeper Liran Strauber, Amir Shalach, Gady Brumer and Dedi Ben Dayan on the defense while Tal Benin, Guy Tzarfati, Baruch Dego all manned the middle with Avi Nimni, Eli Biton and Rodrigo Goldberg rounding out the team.

This Date in History: Sidibe’s Scorcher at Wassermil

Just five years ago, Maccabi Tel Aviv faced Hapoel Beer Sheva on Matchday 15 of the WINNER League at Wassermil Stadium. Prior to kick-off the Israeli football world was saddened to learn of the sudden death of Avi Cohen who had died in a serious traffic accident. Avi Nimni and Yossi Mizrachi manned the Yellow-and-Blue sidelines as Nir Klinger did the same for the hosts with Maccabi sitting in 3rd place on the table, five positions above Beer Sheva.

The guests from Tel Aviv controlled the flow of the match with a number of quality chances. Both teams that day had a number of players who still ply their trade for their respective sides today, including Gal Alberman and Yoav Ziv for Maccabi while Ofir Davidzada and William Soares are part of the desert side’s squad. The deciding blow came in the 58th minute as Djibril Sidibe’s beautiful scorcher of an effort beat Beer Sheva keeper Ohad Cohen to give the victory to Maccabi which you can watch in the video below.
