A wall in memory

A wall in memory of the 108 fans who were murdered or killed on and since October 7th.

Everyone of these fans has a story, but we will never get to see them in the stands, however we will dedicate every moment, goal and title to their memory. Here are their names

Madmon after his dramatic winning goal

Elad Madmon couldn’t have wished for a better day as he scored his debut league goal for Maccabi with a dramatic late penalty and then was called up to the national team for the first time. The 19-year-old who celebrated by pointing at his pulse to signal he was unphased by the pressure, remained with his feet firm on the ground. “The feeling is subdued as exactly a year ago we all experienced one of the worst atrocities this country ever had. I wish for all the hostages to return as we haven’t forgotten them, with our thoughts with all the families who lost their loved ones. I am happy with the call up but the circumstances don’t allow me to be completely happy.”

Madmon, who only last year was scoring goals at this stadium for Hapoel Hadera, added: “I was excited by the call up as this is every kid’s dream. To be part of the national team and represent the country. I just hope that we manage to play well and get good results.”

On his debut league goal for Maccabi, Madmon said: “I feel as if I needed that goal. I received y chances here and feel like I owe the club as this is why I came here for – to score and help the team win the championship”.

As for his goal celebration: “I just wanted to show that I don’t have a pulse and I am calm in such situations”.

Maccabi beat Netanya 2-1

Preview

Maccabi arrived at the Netanya stadium ahead of the MD6 WINNER League match against local side Maccabi aiming to bounce back from last week’s draw against Ironi Tiberias and the defeat to Midtjylland in Belgrade.

Zarko Lazetic whose side hasn’t won in their last three outings in all competitions will aim to guide his charges back to winning ways against the side currently ranked 13th in the table with 3 points from 5 matches.

Lazetic made several changes from the side that was beaten in Belgrade as he welcomed back from suspension Tyrese Asante and Gabi Kanichowsky. Asante joined Stav Lemkin, Raz Shlomo and Nemanja Stojic to his back-four that lined-up infront of goalkeeper Roi Mishpati. Kanichowsky joined Issouf Sissokho and Dor Peretz in Maccabi’s midfield trio with Osher Davida and Hisham Layous also keeping their place on the wings. Eran Zahavi returned to the starting line-up as the veteran striker led the team out with the captain’s armband seeking his first league goal of the season.

The ankle injury Ofek Melika suffered yesterday which is set to sideline him for several months saw Roei Amedi named on the bench. Avishay Cohen, Idan Nachmias, Joris van Overeem, Wesley Patati, Elad Madmon, Henry Addo, Idan Weinberg, and Nir Bitton were the other substitutes waiting for their chance to make an impact.

Prior to kickoff the players of both teams wore T-shirts marking a year since October 7th which read: Remembering everyone

First Half

Supported by 150 of the 1750 fans allowed in the stadium, Maccabi began the match on the front foot. In the opening minute Osher Davida was isolated down the right wing before cutting inside and firing a shot that narrowly cleared the crossbar. In the 5th minute Davida was sent into the box before his attempt of a cross saw a defender foul him in the process. While referee Gal Leibovic waved to play on, Netanya charged forward for a counter attack. Roi Mishpati saved the initial shot before Heriberto Tavares pounced on rebound and tapped the ball home. But Netanya’s celebrations were shortlived as VAR intervened calling Leibovic to the screen. After inspecting the incident Netanya’s goal was dissallowed and Maccabi were awarded a penalty. Eran Zahavi stepped up, sent Omer Nir’on the wrong way and buried the spot kick to put Maccabi infront with his first league goal of the campaign.

While Gabi Kanichowsky, Dor Peretz and Issouf Sissokho had their work cut for themselves in midfield, Dsvida kept tormenting Netanya down the wing. Shortly before the half hour mark Davida charged down tbe right before cutting the ball back for Peretz whose effort was blocked by a Netanya defender.

Second Half

Lazetic made two changes at the break as Idan Nachmias replaced Stav Lemkin at left-back while Henry Addo came on for Layous at the restart. Three minutes into the second half Netanya were back on level terms as Saher Taji broke through the middle, released Tavares whose cross deflected off Nachmias into his own net. Mishpati was at full stretch as he turned a dangerous right foot drive by Rotem Keller out for a corner on 54.

With his side under the cosh Lazetic made another double change as Joris van Overeem came on Sissokho while Elad Madmon replaced Zahavi in the 65th minute. Six minutes after his introduction Madmon turned his man in the box and created some space for himself to have a shot at goal which was blocked at the goalmouth. Van Overeem tried pushing in the rebound but the Dutch born midfielder was also denied what would have been his debut Maccabi goal. Lazetic made his fifth and final substitution as Wesley Patati replaced Davida on 79 for the closing stages.

Patati almost made an immediate impact as Madmon charged into the box and fed Peretz who slipped the ball to the Brazilian. Despite the ball landing on his strong left foot, Patati rolled the ball straight to the hands of Nir’on.

Netanya’s keeper was at his best with a fingertip save to push Madmon’s thunderbolt over the crossbar in the 88th minute. While Maccabi sent everyone forward Netanya threatened to catch the defense on the break. In the 89th minute however Addo was tripped inside the area by Karem Ja’aber with Leibovic pointed directly at the spot. Madmon picked the ball and with confidence of the veteran striker he replaced, planted the ball in the top corner to make it 2-1. Inside injury time Petetz had a volley miss the target by centimeters as Maccabi almost scored a third before Nemanja Stojic managed to clear Netanya’s desperate attempts to equalise.

Maccabi beaten 2-0 by Midtjylland

Preview

Maccabi arrived at the Partizan stadium in Belgrade for their first home game of the Europa League phase campaign against Danish champions FC Midtjylland. Following last week’s defeat away to Sporting Braga, Zarko Lazetic’s side will aim to bounce back and record their first victory of the new League phase. Dor Turgeman who suffered a calf muscle injury in Braga, joined an injury list which already included Sagiv Jehezkel, Ido Shahar, Roy Revivo and Ofir Davidzada. Lazetic was also forced to be without Gabi Kanichowsky and Tyrese Asante who were both sent off in the closing stages of the match in Portugal.

Osher Davida whose penalty in Braga last week wasn’t enough to earn Maccabi points, was named by Lazetic on one wing with Hisham Layous supplying the width on the opposite flank. Elad Madmon spearheaded Maccabi’s attack as the young forward who joined the club in the summer from Hapoel Hadera was handed his chance in the striker’s role.

On the bench alongside goalkeepers Ofek Melika and Roei Amedi, Lazetic, named Avishay Cohen, Eran Zahavi, Yonas Malede, Wesley Patati, Henry Addo, Roey Magor, Ido Oli, Nir Bitton, and Daniel Tishler.

First Half

Maccabi could have had a dream start inside the opening minute as Elad Madmon knocked the ball down for Dor Peretz who released Hisham Layous into the box. The winger cut inside and tried to square the ball before Kevin Mbabu blocked the attempted cross. Six minutes into the game, Midtjylland had an attempt on goal at the opposite end as Jan Kuchta was sent into the box, but his close-range effort was equaled by Roi Mishpati.

Two minutes later Midtjylland should feel fortunate not to have conceded a goal after Nemanja Stojic was first to react to an Osher Davida corner but had his header blocked on the goal line by Ousmane Diao. Peretz pounced on the rebound forcing a save from Midtjylland’s keeper Elias Rafn Olafsson before Stav Lemkin saw his effort bounce off the crossbar from point blank range. Maccabi continued to dominate pinging Midtjylland inside their own haff with Joris van Overeem, Issouf Sissokho and Dor Peretz winning most of the duals at the center of park and feeding their teammates. Van Overeem and Sissokho enjoyed the time and space as the two midfielders even had shots on goal which missed the target. Osher Davida and Hisham Layous kept tormenting Midtjylland’s full backs, but none of their crosses managed to find a teammate in the box.

Five minutes after the half hour mark, van Overeem won the ball inside Midtjylland’s half and released a counterattack which ended with Davida firing a shot straight at the keeper. While Maccabi couldn’t translate their dominance to a goal, Midtjylland exploited a misplaced Mishpati clearance on 39 allowing Aral Simsir to slide the ball into the path of Dju Franculino before he swept it home to put the visitors in front. VAR checked the goal for a potential offside, but the goal was left to count before the halftime whistle sent a frustrated Maccabi to regroup in the dressing room during the interval.

Second half

With no changes at halftime Maccabi emerged for the second half determined to grab an equalizer and get back in the game. Three minutes after the restart Midtjylland’s defense struggled to clear a Davida corner which fell to Raz Shlomo before Stojic missed the target from the goalmouth scramble. Maccabi kept on pushing forward as Lauous broke into the box and cut the ball back for Peretz whose half volley shaved the side netting.

In the 55th minute Georgian referee Giorgi Kruashvili was called to the screen for a potential penalty after Lemkin collided with Simsir in the box. But Kruashvili decided to stick with his initial decision and not award Midtjylland what would have been a soft penalty.

Madmon came close to level the score on 65 as he cut inside on the right and blasted a shot which was punched away by the keeper. Nachmias went into the referee’s book for charging down Chilufya a minute later. Lazetic reacted with a triple substitution in the 72nd minute as Avishay Cohen, Henry Addo and Eran Zahavi came on for Lemkin, Layous and Madmon.

Wesley Patati replaced Davida in the 83rd minute as Lazetic added a fresh pair of legs for the closing stages. While Maccabi tried desperately to grab an equalizer throwing caution to the wind, Midtjylland doubled their lead. In the 88th minute a counterattack which began deep inside the Dane’s half saw Edward Chiufya beat Mishpati from close range to seal the victory. Maccabi will return to Israel for domestic league action before heading for the international break but will return to Belgrade later this month for the MD3 home game against Real Sociedad.
